Project description
Kalasataman keskus is new residential, business and administrative “Downtown” of Helsinki city. Part of the development project were two inclined tunnels, each with completely different purpose. The first, Service tunnel, is used for bypass of the central heating system of Helsinki. Challenge was breakthrough into the existing, over 20 km long utility tunnel. To avoid the risk of damaging high pressure steam pipes by blasting, the last 2.5 m long round was excavated without blasting. Method of sawing the rock into smaller blocks, which were pulled out one after another was used. The second, Metro bridge tunnel, is temporary construction and serves for building up of new metro bridge pillars. Along the whole length of straight tunnel the 20 m deep shafts were drilled, in which the bridge pillars were built. Construction method enabled minimum interruption of Helsinki Metro during transfer of traffic on the new bridge.
